Reinforced doors in Mallorca

Reinforced and armoured are not the same thing

Shops use the two words interchangeably and they are not. In a reinforced door, the steel plate is added to a timber leaf; the frame is usually the original one or a strengthened version. In an armoured door, the whole structure including the frame is factory-built as a security unit and tested as an assembly.

In practice this shows up in where the door gives way. A reinforced door withstands blows to the leaf well, but its weak points are the frame and the hinge area. An armoured door is designed so that there is no obviously weaker point.

If someone offers you a "certified grade 3 reinforced door", ask for the certificate and check that the test was carried out on the door plus frame assembly. It is the quickest way to tell whether you are being sold what they claim.

When a reinforced door is the right call

When you want to move up from a standard door without the cost of an armoured one. When the opening or the structure cannot take the weight and thickness of an armoured door. When you want a specific timber finish that would make an armoured version considerably more expensive.

Also for internal doors you want to protect: access to a storage room, an office, or the area where the safe is kept. A reinforced door with a good lock is more than enough there.

If the case is the main door of a home left empty for long periods, we will recommend an armoured door. We would rather lose a sale than sell you less protection than you need.

The lock matters more than the plate

In most home burglaries the door is not broken: the lock is manipulated. Bumping, impressioning and cylinder extraction are fast, quiet techniques that work on old locks no matter how reinforced the leaf is.

That is why in every reinforcement we carry out, the lock and cylinder are specified to the same level as the plate: anti-bumping and anti-drill cylinder, protective escutcheon and a key with an ownership card to control copies.

It is the part of the budget that returns the most per euro, and the one most often cut.
