The types of security door and what each is for

The armoured door is the highest level for a home. It is manufactured as a certified assembly, with a perimeter steel tube structure, and tested to the UNE-EN 1627 standard that defines resistance classes. This is what we recommend as a main entrance door.

The reinforced door is a conventional door strengthened with steel sheeting. It protects considerably more than a standard door and costs less, but its frame is not part of the security assembly.

The fire door answers a different risk: containing fire for a defined period. It is a legal requirement in many commercial premises and storage rooms. Do not confuse fire resistance with burglary resistance: they are different tests, and a door can pass one and fail the other.

What the security grades mean

The European standard UNE-EN 1627 classifies doors into grades according to the time and tools an attacker needs to open them. Grades 2 and 3 cover most homes; grades 4 to 6 are reserved for high-risk environments or for protecting specific spaces such as a collection or a safe.

One detail worth knowing: the grade is certified on the complete assembly, door and frame installed. A grade 4 door fitted badly does not protect like a grade 4. That is why installation is not an extra, it is part of the product.

If you have home insurance, it is worth checking what your policy requires. Some insurers ask for a minimum grade to cover forced-entry burglary, and others apply discounts if you can prove the installation.

How to choose without overpaying

The most common mistake is buying from a catalogue. The right door depends on the opening, the swing direction, whether the frame is plumb, the type of wall and whether the building has any aesthetic restrictions. All of that is settled in a twenty-minute visit.

The second mistake is looking only at the leaf. A door with an excellent leaf and a mediocre lock gets opened through the lock. We size the whole assembly: leaf, frame, lock, cylinder, escutcheon and hinges.

The third is not thinking about the keys. A high-security lock with a key protected by an ownership card stops anyone making copies without your permission, and that solves more real problems than adding a resistance grade.
